I talk a lot about breastfeeding. That’s because it’s something that should be talked about a lot! So many moms out there, struggling with what is supposed to be “the most natural thing in the world” (I really want to punch anyone in the face who says that, btw), don’t realize that their struggles are normal, their frustrations are shared, and that they are not alone!

One of the things that I struggled with the most at the beginning of my breastfeeding journey was pain. Pain and bleeding. Bleeding and crying. And it really just spiraled from there.

That’s when my lactation consultant handed me a piece of paper that played a big role in my breastfeeding success.

I use the one on the right

Note: This cream does contain Cortisone, which is a steroid!

This salve, made with three products which can be purchased at your local pharmacy, helps to heal, prevent future damage, and soothe. I used it sparingly, applying a very tiny amount after every other feeding for as long as the bleeding/ cracks/ damage was there.

One thing my lactation consultant told me was that it takes about 2 hours to be “fully absorbed.” This means, if baby wants to eat again less than 2 hours after applying, I would rinse it off.

Total, the “recipe” made three tablespoons worth of cream. I still have probably 1.5 tablespoons left after using it pretty regularly on two separate occasions. I don’t expect to have to use it again.

The top of the paper my lactation consultant gave me has some useful information about why these specific creams were chosen to make this magical concoction of nipple-healing greatness:

Basically, just because you fix the latch, doesn’t mean your nipples will heal. A cut/ sore/ wound needs to be tended to. Continuous exposure/ use will only make it worse!

This salve was recommended to me by a board certified lactation consultant. If you are considering using it, make sure to check with your LC and/or pediatrician beforehand!
